The Precipice of Eternity
"Death is the road to awe."
– Darren Aronofsky, The Fountain

1. Fear
Fragility. It’s something which I haven’t stopped thinking about.
Moments of collapse that make you doubt about a lot of things.
Especially if you are living the right way.
If, by doing what we usually do on our daily basis, we’ll be satisfied with ourselves when we abandon this reality.
All of this goes through my head while I watch the city through my room’s window before going to bed to rest for a few moments, feeling exhausted for no apparent reason.

2. The Process
When lying down, I close my eyes and I fall asleep almost immediately, but there’s something different.
I feel… weird.
There’s a high-pitched buzzing in my ears; I feel my body vibrate, like when your arm gets numb and tingly after you slept over it, except it’s all over my body.
And, suddenly, I feel a lightness that I never felt before.
Weightless.
Calmness.
An inexplicable peacefulness.
I should be scared, but for some reason, I only feel calm.

3. The Mist
When I open my eyes, I realize I have no idea where I am.
The place is dark, black, there’s fog everywhere.
There seems to be no sound or any other way to guide me.
It seems to have no end (or beginning).
It is then when I realize that a light source begins to emanate near me.
It is then, when I turn to the light, that I see her.

4. The Meeting
A rather… unusual sighting.
A woman, covered by a black veil, holding three roses near to where the heart would be, and wearing a crown made of roses as well.
But I still can’t distinguish her well, the mist covers her face partially.
I should be scared or overwhelmed by the strangeness of what’s going on, but then again, all I feel is quietness.

5. Doubt
Aside of all the rare things I’m feeling (and seeing), I can’t stop what comes out of my mouth.
“Who are you?”, I asked.
Interesting. My voice doesn’t sound the way it should.
It must be some kind of lucid dream, or something that I have yet to understand.
I’m not surprised though. To all that’s happening, nothing should intrigue me.
I was wrong.

6. Revelation
As if she’d read my mind, the fog starts to vanish, giving me a clear sight at the woman I had in front of me.
She’s… beautiful, despite the mysterious aura she has.
“The one that will guide you through this plane, the spiritual realm.” She says.
When asking her name, she tells me that she’s had many over the millennia.
Macaria, Persephone, Amaterasu, Kali, etc.
But she tells me her name is not important, so I can call her as I see fit.
I decide to call her Minerva.
“What’s important”, she says, “is the reason for what I brought you to my presence.”
I couldn’t understand what she was talking about until she explained that humanity is rushing to a dark abyss fast, and it is essential that I spread her message before it’s too late.

7. The Growing Darkness
She explains to me that she made me enter this «soft death» state so she could bring me to the spiritual realm.
The edgeless night.
“Humanity is crossing The Great Esoteric Depression”, Minerva says, “a period where all that made man a compassionate, loving being is vanishing. In its place violence, chaos and hopelessness are reigning humanity’s heart.
You are so blinded you believe violence can make a path for peace. «Wars for peace» is your excuse. Piece by piece, the human inside of you is dying, and if you do nothing to stop it, you’ll hit an all-time low…
And all love will be lost.”

8. Tears of Blood
According to her, there are mystical, metaphysical beings, that are in charge of watching over us, of making sure we are going on the right path, of making us evolve into something we can’t even imagine.
But we’re headed in the wrong direction.
“We’ve cried countless tears of blood. Blood that’s been spilled by innocent souls in senseless conflicts.
No love. No compassion. No empathy.
Your fellow men have become your enemy.”
Then, a whisper, filled with pain and impotence: “the light is about to go out.”

9. The Message
“Can’t you see that the joy of life has always been in front of you this whole time?
We don’t want that all that you’ve achieved, all that you’ve done (including your dark times, painful lessons you’ve had to go through) as a species is forgotten.
We don’t want you to sing your swan song yet.”
She starts to get closer while she speaks, this time with a little touch of hope in her voice.
“There’s still time. It’s not the moment to break the final seal. Your ephemeral but special lives are designed to fulfill a specific purpose in the cosmic scheme of things. The smallest action has a repercussion in the bigger picture.
You are destined to leave as lights, not as shadows. Don’t trade water for salt, you’re not as broken as it is.
There are so many truths in the universe. Many kept hidden so that you may find them, harvest their wisdom and light with these candles the abyss of ignorance.
You were not born on your planet to live a practical life as you’ve conditioned yourselves to. Lives that have made you abandon what truly makes you human. Your arts, your passions, everything that embellishes life and allows you to live in a more placid and intricately beautiful way.
This dehumanization process is taking you nowhere, fast.
You must become something more than this. Learn to forgive. Even those who’ve hurt you in the most painful, destructive way. It is key to begin the process of straightening your already pierced, crooked path.”
But, according to Minerva, there’s one truth that, while at the beginning it may seem simple enough, it is the most noble truth of all.
We don’t want that all that you’ve achieved, all that you’ve done (including your dark times, painful lessons you’ve had to go through) as a species is forgotten.
We don’t want you to sing your swan song yet.”

10. Apocalypse
When being close enough to me, she rises her right hand and puts it over my forehead. This causes something inside of me that I can’t explain any other way.
A feeling… beyond my comprehension.
“«Everyone» suffers in life.
You’ve made yourselves believe you’re not important. That you’re peripheral, collateral. You’re letting yourselves be consumed by darkness, when it is light what you should let enter your hearts. You must let your lives be in sync with the flow, with its highs and lows. Fundamental parts of life.
The end will come, eventually. The universe survives on give and take. It’s part of the eternal cycle of life.
The equilibrium to the chaos of the cosmos.
The entropy.
But, until then, we see no need for you to eliminate one another, of not loving one another, of not empathizing mutually, of individualizing and letting your fellow to their own luck.
An organism at war with itself is doomed.
We’ve seen the bombs fall, but we know that, if these teachings spread, if you come to understand that you’re all part of one greater, invisible self, that vision will not become your reality.”
And I see them fall too… The desolation. The destruction. Widows. Orphans. Mothers holding their inert sons claiming for piety. Plagues. Famine…
Death.
A vision of a future that awaits us if we don’t take the necessary measures, if we don’t start the process of society’s healing.
“Unity is the basis of survival, but love is what ties everything together in the universe.”
After saying this, a white, blinding light covers my eyes, and I feel I’m coming out of a void. I start to feel weight again. The high-pitch buzzing is ringing in my ears again.
And thus I’m starting to feel as I return to my body.
A feeling… beyond my comprehension.

11. The Heartbeat
I… can’t understand what just happened.
Did I really “die” for a few moments?
Was I really in the spiritual plane?
Or was it just a lucid dream?
It’s in that moment when I hear something I had not heard during my stay with Minerva: The beat of my heart.

12. The Truth
I now see everything with such a clarity like never before in my short life.
I now understand she’s right. About everything.
«We all» suffer in life, but it is in us to stop darkness from consuming us, of accepting our mistakes, of forgiving those who hurt us, of trading rifles for shovels.
Only we can end this disconnection, and see us, not as ones and zeroes, but as an absolute one. Understand we all come from (and are part of) the same invisible infinity.
It is time to learn to love as we’ve learned to die.
It’s time to remember what it’s like to feel alive.
